“Off to La Theine with you two” Mom spoke up, “Take the side paths like I showed you, and stay together… and don’t fight… and keep your distance from the orcs please, I’m still trying to get the stains out of your clothes from the last time!” She handed us each a stack of silent oils & prism powders that she had recently made.
Our Mother Calulu was one of the best Alchemists in all of San d’Oria… least in our eyes. She amazed us with how quickly she could put something together on the spot, out of what seemed like nothing. “Use them wisely please, this should be more than enough for your quick trip” Mom then pulled me close and whispered “Watch out for your sister, don’t let her get in any trouble please!” Mom usually went with us, but on this occasion our baby sister Ashlynna was sick. Mom needed some extra honey to make a certain remedy for her, and it was up to Kaellen & I to go get some honey from the bees down near the entrance to Ordelle Caves.
On this particular occasion Kaellen was upset that we had to go, as she had planned to go off with her friends and explore Carpenter’s Landing. Mom however had a rule about safety in numbers, which required that Kaellen go with me instead, and Kaellen was obviously grumpy about the whole idea, I knew it wasn’t going to be a fun day. We gathered our supplies and left the Mog House.
Kaellen then started off towards North San d’Oria.
“Hey! Where do you think you are going? La Theine is this that way! I said pointing towards the gate to West Ronfaure.
“I’m going to Carpenter’s Landing.. There are bees there too you know!” Kaellen replied smugly. “Mom doesn’t have to know where we got the honey from, and plus then I can still meet up with my new friends there.”
“You know she’ll be able to tell…” I said dryly. “She always says how the honey from La Theine is more potent then from anywhere else… I think we should just go to La Theine… if we hurry, then we could get back before mid-day and you could still go meet up with your friends” I pleaded.
“Do what you want Katella!” Kaellen retorted, “I’m going to Carpenter’s Landing with my friends, I’m sure we’ll find some honey there.. and it’ll be a lot more fun!… besides Mom likes the whole safety in numbers thing right?.. we’ll have more than just two of us.” Kaellen took off running towards the door to Carpenter’s Landing.
“Kaellen wait!” I yelled but she was too far ahead, and she obviously wasn’t going to listen anyway. I finally caught up with her inside of Carpenter’s Landing. There was a group of five other kids standing there preparing for their journey. “Kaellen, we could go to La Theine and be back… please come with me!, I’ll even help you catch up with group when we’re done” I said.
Kaellen growing more and more annoyed with me, grabbed my arm and pulled me to the side. “Look! I told you, I am going with my friends, Mom’s just being picky, any old honey will do.. we’ll find some. I’m not going to La Theine today! You can come along… and carry whatever honey we find I guess, but be quiet about it, don’t spoil the day! .. And try not to embarrass me in front of my friends!”
I had often wondered how valid Mom’s safety in numbers idea was. It had only taken a few trips with Kaellen’s friends to know, that while they were a lot of fun, they always seemed to get themselves into trouble. It was at that point I started wondering if I shouldn’t head to La Theine on my own.
No matter what I did at this point, I’d be disobeying at least one of Mom’s directions, going alone to La Theine, or keeping “track” of Kaellen. Sometimes it’s such a pain having a twin sister! My thoughts turned to poor little Ashlynna at home not feeling well. I decided that I wouldn’t feel good bringing just any old honey back, Mom asked for the honey from La Theine, I’m sure it was for a good reason.
“Fine then.. I’ll see you later!” I growled at Kaellen and started my way back towards North Sandy.
“Fine!” said Kaellen walking over to her friends.
“Whats wrong with your sister?” I hear one of the boys from the group say.
“Oh, she’s just a killjoy.. She wants to go to La Theine for honey.” said Kaellen sarcastedly.
“La Theine.. sounds like fun to me..” said the blonde pony-tailed hume girl from group. I hadn’t seen this girl before “I wouldn’t mind exploring La Theine today” she said.
“No its fine, we’ll have more fun without her.. ” smirked Kaellen
“You really going to make her go alone?” the blonde girl asked Kaellen.
“She’ll be fine, … besides, it gets tiring spending all your time with your twin, I know I could use the break!” Kaellen laughed.
“Well, I’m kinda in the mood to go to La Theine… maybe I’ll go help your sister” said the blonde hume picking something up off the ground.
“Kauri no.. don’t go” shouted Rylan, the dark haired hume boy from the group.
“Its fine, I’ll catch up with you all later” The girl started running in my direction ” Hey…. Hey Katella is it?” the blonde girl said running up to me. ” hey wait up.. I want to go to La Theine too.”
“Why aren’t you going with them?” I asked her surprised. “I’m really ok… I’m tougher than I look” I said…. really trying to look the part.
The girl laughed “Ya, you look it… however…” she said gently recovering from her pocket what she had picked up from the ground just a minute earlier. “I thought you might actually need these…” and she handed me my stack of prisim powders.
“Oh.. ya” I said, very embarrased now.. “Thank you.”
“My name is Kauri, I’m new around here.. my family just moved here from Bastok. “she said softly.
“Nice to meet you Kauri” I said, “.. and thank you again for bringing my prism powders… I appreciate it”
“No Problem” she said “… now where we off to exactly?” asked Kauri.
“I was going to La Theine, near one of the entrances to Ordelle’s Caves… but don’t feel obliged, I really can do it.” I said, still walking towards the gate.
“Oh I’m sure you could, but I’d still like to come along if thats ok” said Kauri.
With that we headed out the gate to West Ronfaure.
