I’ve been drawn in! Not by a Minotaur , or a Dread dragon, but rather by Final Fantasy XIII. I am definitely enamored. 🙂 We spent the evening the last two days taking turns playing. My husband will play through a section, and then I’ll login on my game and catch up to him. Our son reads out of the walkthru book, its a family affair.. lol!
My husband, who is normally the “click through cut-scenes quickly” type is actually enjoying the storyline of this game, and soaking them in. Our kids even stop playing to watch because its that entertaining. I’m pretty impressed. I really love the whole “paradigm shift” dynamic. In an odd way it reminds me of playing FFXI’s Puppetmaster, only with better AI. After getting a handle on the paradigm shift aspect, I was thinking that I had read about FFXIV’s Thaumaturge getting an ability called “Paradigm Shift” and was getting excited, but when I went back and looked, it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with changing jobs in battle, only changing the area of effect for your spells… Darn.. hehe.. Can you imagine?
That would be so cool to change on the fly like that during battle, course for the online game, I suppose it might be a game breaker. It gives you access to so much to be able to change tactics, and build up dynamic strategies. That said, I definitely don’t find FFXIII easy. Having the paradigm shifts available in no way means easy success. You still have to work at it, and if you hesitate or select the wrong paradigm shift at the wrong time, it can quickly mean game over.
I also respect that when you do die, you don’t seem to loose the items you had, Its like a mulligan.. a do-over. You pretend the first failure never happened. I kinda wish there had been something like that for some of the mission fights in FFXI. I’m reminded of the promy’s where you would spend so much begging..er.. finding a party, gathering the animas, then all the time it took to reach the top, just to fail, and not have the supplies for another try. Huge disappointment.. because you many times knew that you’d have to spend another 4 hours talking people into coming and helping you, because someone would generally get bent out of shape and leave, or would just have to leave because it had already taken so much time.
I appreciate the auto heal function, that the game intuitively knows that you probably do want to heal the person who needs it the most first. I like that if you use libra, the other characters in your team will cast according to the mob’s weakness. Others may disagree, but I think its very progressive and fast paced for the most part.. (could be I’m slow.. lol)
In true Final Fantasy style, they give you characters that you can relate to and care about. With each cut-scene it answers one question, while at the same time adding a few more questions.. just enough to keep you interested. Music (as always) is very good so far… I find it pleasantly getting stuck in my head. The art is beautiful.. they did a wonderful job!
Overall, I’m pretty happy with this title.. makes me that much more anxious to see what they are going to come up with in the near future.. 🙂
