Just two years ago, I remember Blind casually telling me about this random Youtube Let’s Play personality, who now was doing a series on “my game”. That game, of course was FFXIV. Now anyone who knows me in real life, knows that I’m really not one who likes to “sit and watch” anything. Not a huge fan of TV (save for Doctor Who and Sherlock – thanks a lot Sounsyy!.. lol), and only certain movies ever hold my attention. Not because I’m one of the trillion others who can claim “ADD” or “ADHD”, I’m just pretty particular on what I want to spend time on and will think of something more “useful” I could be doing. In general, I’d rather be out “doing” rather than watching anything, but Blind really wanted me to watch it with him.
He said this “Let’s Player” was different, and that his shows were fun. Blind said, that he wasn’t going out of his way to show how much better he was than anyone else, which was so common among so many other Youtube personalities who like to come off as an expert at everything. Blind said that this one was focused on genuinely enjoying his time in-game, and that was pretty refreshing. So I relented… made an abnormal choice for me… and decided to go ahead and check it out. Plus, it would make Blindrage happy, so we sat together and watched a few episodes.
Blind would laugh at me as I would say out loud “No no… its right here… no click there” pointing at the screen…or when I would start getting frustrated as I’d sadly point out that SamboNZ wasn’t actually getting any exp in his “leveling session” because the other person in his party was way too high and neither of them noticed so he wasn’t actually getting much out of the experience, or that the reason he couldn’t do something is because he hadn’t gained access to it yet, and how much more fun he could be having with it if he did this other quest first… lol.
There was so much that could be enjoyed in the game, but if you didn’t know, or didn’t understand why things worked the way they did, it could be rather confusing to new players. I loved the times when Pico would come on and help him, it was nice to see SamboNZ finally get some real help.
In March 2012, There was an open invitation to go sign up for SamboNZ’s new linkshell in April. Luckily it was a weekend, so Blind and I actually stayed up far later than normal, in order to “just this once” go participate in a “SamboNZ” episode. We really didn’t expect much to come out of it. We thought we would just maybe meet a few people, and then likely return to “life as usual”…. but that is not what happened.
It ended up being the start of some amazing friendships that I would be so sad to have missed out on. We both were very amazed at how genuinely nice SamboNZ was, it wasn’t just “part of the show”, as you’d typically expect. He was warm, funny, level-headed and friendly. The people who -like us- also made the choice to come out to the “one-time” event, seemed to be made of the same cloth as well.
While Pico and Seraphis and Seyo, were off making the LS.. we danced, emoted, chatted and waited in Ul’dah near the Adventurer’s Guild.
Blind and I were surprised, and laughed as this funny little Lalafell came over out of the blue and sat down in Blind’s lap. Mini Ninja was the name. ^^
A very tall and stoic Elezen gentleman standing to the side, seemingly overseeing us all, Merikosum Neaman…
The episode ended, we filed it away in our brains as a “fun memory” and then all went off on our different ways, with very little expectation of anything more. The next day however, when we logged in, these people were online.. and social, friendly, and actually fun! The days ahead added so much more enjoyment to our time in game.🙂
There are certain points in our lives, where the tiniest choice makes all the difference in the world. We are seriously amiss if we ever think that the things we choose to do only impact our lives. One small variant either way, one choice, one small decision does in fact ripple outwards and affect not only us, but those around us… even those we’ve not yet met at the time.
Regardless of how small we personally feel our impact is.. make no mistake, the waves are felt. The decisions and attitudes we take can profusely change things for us not only now, but later on down the road in ways we can’t even imagine. We should always pay respect to the ripples caused by the smallest of pebbles we throw into the world.
Thank you SamboNZ for that split-second where you decided to start making “Let’s Play” videos. Thank you for picking up FFXIV, and giving Blind and I the chance to meet up with you and to see that you are genuinely warm and friendly on both sides of the camera.
Above all, thank you for your friendship, and the friendships we’ve gained, all because the wonderful ripple you’ve made in our lives! We’re so thankful for it.
Thanks so much for everything you’ve done to promote and inspire such a great community! The friends and joy this community has brought me personally is irreplaceable, and its owed all to you. We are so glad to be a part of this, and to be able to consider you a dear friend!
Have a beautiful Birthday SamboNZ! ^^ Much Love, from both our own and our online family!
We want to wish you the very best Birthday imaginable!
