Square Enix recently held a 1st anniversary video contest which a good friend of mine entered. Unfortunately hers didn’t end up being one of the selected.. but it really was awesome, so I wanted to spotlight it here, because I personally think she did an amazing job and hers is still my absolute favorite above all the rest!
Slight Tangent regarding one of the winning entries…..
While there where some fun ones that were submitted for this contest, there was one winning video in particular that really kind of bothered me. Not because the video was bad. Video quality on a whole good, and honestly I’ve seen other videos from that same person that I really liked.. but this particular one just bothers me to have been selected as a “celebration of a year in Eorzea”.
I won’t post the actual video here out of respect.. because like I said, I do really like some of the other videos this person has put out and work they’ve done, and of course because this is just my own personal opinion and in no way should reflect badly on the maker of the video because they are actually pretty great. The video is a good “wake up” statement to the community.. but it isn’t quite a “celebration” of being in Eorzea at all. It kinda leaves you with a “hopeless” feeling about our FFXIV community which struck me as sad.
Basically the video’s summary showed that a year in the game changed a player… and not for the good either. They start off as a new player having to deal with the impatience of others. They make a vow to themselves that when they get better at the game, they are going to be nicer to new players, then fast forward a year ahead, and you find them just as impatient if not worse than the people they had to deal with. This player even ends up abandoning a duty because it included a new player that didn’t know the fight.
It depicts a very real issue.. in that some people do get entirely too focused on themselves, and do lose the empathy for what it feels like to experience content for the first time, or get the chance to learn first hand ‘how to do a fight”. That is one of the most negative parts of any MMO, is that people can get quite selfish and wrapped up in themselves in these virtual worlds. They forget that this is a game for fun, and is the most enjoyable when shared with others.
My most enjoyable times have been when I’ve helped others accomplish something for the first time. It even makes me happy in duty finder when the system announces that some player in our group has just received the “Mapping” achievement for that dungeon.. to be honest, it almost makes me try even harder to make that experience is a good one.. It doesn’t matter that it is some person I don’t know.. that I’ll never talk to again. Those firsts should always be memorable… and preferably not in a negative way.
I’m not opposed to that video.. because the issue is real sometimes.. I just am disappointed to have SE select it as a depiction of what a “year in Eorzea” means.
Ok..done preaching I guess… anyway… lets end the post on a positive note.. because that is far more fun… Go watch Mini’s video again!
As Mini Ninja posted:
“So Bring it on Dev Team, because next year is going to be even better!”
Lets choose to make this next year be better… for all of our community.. both new and old!
