Kind of a late post, but Phoenix is down! (4/29/15)
Note: I mixed in my favorite pictures from this cutscenes all throughout this post not in any order.
The last two Turns had been rather unremarkable in Duty Finder. No one really worrying about if people were new, no one deciding it was impossible to have an English party member.. for the most part, we just went in, did our jobs and got the clears… no nonsense, which is more like what I’m used too honestly.
After watching three different guides for Final Coil of Bahamut Turn 12, I spent the evenings of 4/28 & 4/29 just queuing up over and over again for T12. My T12 Duty Finder adventure proceeded as follows:
Sometimes.. If you don’t laugh.. you’ll cry….. I chose to laugh when things got quite ridiculous.
Queue #1 – Entered and it gave the message of having someone that hadn’t cleared the content yet. Since I was the one in cutscene the longest, because I actually had to manually skip, one tank knew it was me and told the group in Japanese that they probably shouldn’t ask the scholar to do anything. We started and wiped pretty early, so the tank waves goodbye at me, and I get removed. …. hmm… I have to kinda laugh because we hadn’t even gotten far enough for me to really mess up any mechanics yet, let alone see anything past a black & white fire neither of which had even selected me to deal with.. but oh well. I still want to experience this fight.. so I queue again…
Queue #2 – Again.. started fight, we get to a couple of Bennu’s, and then I still don’t even know what really happened, Everyone all at once suddenly took huge damage and couldn’t get us caught back up because it kept happening. They left, and I was left alone with Phoenix… I poked around a bit, then let Phoenix take me down once and left.
Queue #3 – This party went pretty flawless, They even gave me the job of being the third in the fountain towards the end, which was actually fun. We reached 2% and thought it might be golden, until a few poorly aimed pinion birds (not sure their name) crossed paths and ended up taking us out. Was nice though because even though a member left (so party didn’t continue) I got to see the whole fight roughly, and wasn’t feeling so overwhelmed about the actual difficulty of this fight.
Next day 4/29/15
Queue #4, #5, & #6 – More practice.. at this point feeling ok still
Queue #7 – This party was….. interesting… My healing partner was also a scholar I’ll call “Lico”, and everything was going fine until Brand of Purgatory was needing to be passed. First time wipe, because we both tried to run into each other and somehow missed.. lag or something… ok.. fair enough, my bad. Next attempt I decided I would stay still since the other scholar now called out wanting to be “the one to trade” according to google translate. So this next time I stay put, and let the other scholar deal with running through me. Everything seemed fine, but on the second occurance to pass it, they ran through me, then immediately back through me again, which transferred the debuff back to me again, and I died when “Flames of Unforgiving” hit me and we wipe… OK.. accidents happen.. no big deal…
We try it again, and the other scholar “Lico” runs through me once to take the debuff really kinda early, but it transferred and I think ok fine, was still during cast so whatever…. but then “Lico” runs through me again in order to get closer to the off tank to cast on them… then they run back through me a third time and it transfers yet again!! causing damage each transfer… Three whole passes during one single casting of “Flames of Unforgiving!!” I hadn’t seen anyone do that anywhere…. I didn’t have enough time to put another adlo on either of us and so we die again, wiping the party.
Tank “Ashley” checks party list and notices I have an English client… so of course, its all my doing things didn’t go well. Not a word from the other scholar “Lico”. The other tank states they aren’t going to vote kick me just because I’m new, so instead that tank leaves and they all follow suite. Least the other tank had some decency about them.
To be honest, I was a little miffed at the other scholar for not owning up a little, as well as for the tank “Ashley” to just assume. It honestly had nothing to do with me. I wasn’t the one not paying attention where I was running, and I wasn’t the one transferring sooo many extra times..
I’m kinda feeling frustrated at this point, but I queue again.. I don’t think this fight is actually beyond me. I think I can do a decent job at this… ><
Queue #8- Load in and I groan out loud.. the tank “Ashley” that had made a big deal about me being English is there, and was already warning the party that I’m an English player and didn’t know the fight. This time the other healer (also a scholar) was a player named Vita Lady, and they spoke up and told the party it was fine because they knew English. They walked me through things I already knew.. things like “Black fire near go boom boom”, and “yellow skill important” to which I respond ” < Adloquium > hai.. < Understood > “. While it felt a bit demeaning to have them think I was so incompetent without being able to convey very well that I actually did understand the course of the fight, I didn’t want to make a big deal about it.
I was actually thankful that the other scholar was willing to at least try to communicate and help anyway despite being told how inept I likely was. We wiped once, dps again wasn’t in their actual marked spot to lay down their blackfire so was too close to our healer one… again, somehow this was decided to be my fault even though our healer blackfire was ENTIRELY INSIDE of our marked location.. ><
Sometimes I wish there was a replay function for parties to see what really happened.. so they could actually pay attention and see, and not guess as to what went wrong. I sooo wanted to be able to show I wasn’t entirely hopeless in this fight.
Vita Lady cordially explains black fire to me again… I calm myself over automatically being presumed guilty and grin and bear it, I simply use auto-translate < Understood > after their re-explanation. This time things are going well, with only a few mishaps. I have to raise Vita Lady once, and another dps twice… but we still clear!
I promptly give my commendation to Vita Lady for not immediately giving up just because I play on an English client, and for calming the rest of the party over it. I Thank them for party, and bow to Vita Lady before leaving the instance.. and still ended up getting two commendations!
In the end, I got what I wanted from that.. no drops but didn’t matter.. my biggest goal was to get to the cutscene.. and I did, and boy was it worth it!
Not sure what to think about the next Turn 13 runs. I hope they go a little smoother than this, but we’ll see. I just want to finish this out before Heavensward, and my determination while a bit battered, isn’t broken. Overall to be honest I have far more positive Duty Finder experiences on this Japanese server than negative ones. The negative ones sting a little, but as long as I remind myself that they are not really that common, and remind myself not to just give up.. it ends up working out. Generally if you do your job, you are fine, but just goes to show you there are people everywhere that are a bit discriminatory when it comes to other people they themselves can’t or don’t even try to understand.
